Every bar and coin is placed on a calibrated analytical balance before anything else. Investment-grade bullion sits in a narrow range just above its stated mass — refiners always over-pour by a few milligrams to guarantee the stamped minimum.

Counterfeits almost always fail this step. A genuine 1oz gold bar might weigh 31.108 g; a tungsten-core fake at the same dimensions will read several tenths of a gram off. This single test catches the vast majority of counterfeits circulating in the market.

A small number of high-end fakes are weighted with tungsten — they pass the density test because tungsten has nearly the same density as gold. But sound travels through tungsten about 38% faster than through gold, and that's what ultrasound measures.

We pulse an ultrasonic probe against the bar and read the thickness. A genuine 10oz gold bar roughly 8 mm thick reads ~8 mm. A tungsten-core fake of the same physical thickness reads closer to 5 mm — the waves traverse it too quickly. The same test detects hollow cavities inside the bar.

An XRF spectrometer fires broad-spectrum X-rays at the bar. The metal re-emits X-rays at wavelengths unique to each element, and the detector decodes those signatures into a full compositional breakdown — all in under 20 seconds, with 0.01% accuracy.

XRF only reads the surface (~20 microns deep), so it's not a standalone test. It is, however, excellent at catching gold-plated counterfeits: nickel and other alloys used in plating show up immediately. Combined with density and ultrasound, it closes the last gap.
